SIDNArnhem, 26 May 2008 – SIDN, the .nl registry, today announced that, with effect from 14 July 2008, the ‘Regulations on the Registration of .nl Domain Names’ will be replaced by two sets of general terms and conditions: one for registrars, and the other for registrants. The change will help .nl registrants by giving SIDN the scope to respond promptly to market developments. It will be possible, for example, for SIDN to update its registration procedures without the formality of regulatory changes.

Accessible and flexible
Many registrars perceive the existing regulations to be somewhat officious. The new general terms and conditions are clear and workable. In many cases, strict rules have made way for less formal working practices, which are set out in procedural descriptions. As a result, it is easier for SIDN to change the way it works, as circumstances change. In addition, the procedures will be available on SIDN’s website for registrars and registrants to consult whenever they wish. This will have considerable benefits in terms of accessibility, flexibility and transparency.

Form and style
SIDN’s CEO Roelof Meijer explained, “The changes mainly involve form and structure, rather than material content. The formal, legalistic wording of the old regulations has been replaced by accessible language. At the same time, the documents have been made more concise by the use of references to website-published procedures wherever appropriate. The terms and conditions can be read on the website already, and come into practical effect on 14 July 2008. From then on, the ‘Regulations on the Registration of .nl Domain Names’ and the ‘Regulations for Registrars’ will no longer be valid. We are sure that the new terms and conditions will contribute to the quality and transparency of the .nl domain.”
