Yes we did indeed, several times we posted about OpenDNS on our blog; and recommended them to several of our users; and we still do. We believe that what OpenDNS does to DNS it a honest and great service. They have shown to their users they DO listen to their customer base and they did prove they deliver a professional platform.

Drupal CMS used by the Whitehouse

Drupal is now the selected CMS for the Whitehouse frontpage, the new administation did choose to move from close-source to open-source, and it shows that open-source is not half as bad as some do try to make us believe.

The WhiteHouse.gov Web site now employs open-source software called Drupal to manage and publish its content, a high-profile endorsement for the project and the two-year-old start-up Acquia that supports it.
Drupal is open-source software, meaning that anyone may see, modify, and redistribute the source code underlying the software that’s actually installed on a computer. Specifically, Drupal is governed by the GNU General Public License. Acquia sells support for Drupal, and there are plenty of add-on modules to tailor it to particular uses.

Good news from OpenDNS

Todays newsletter of openDNS did reveal some good news, additional servers in a new Datacenter in Europe (Amsterdam) and they finally announced they are also going to reveal an Asian location later this year. This is good news for many Asian customers which are depending on the often poor managed DNS servers of their Internet Providers.

OpenDNS provides services to businesses, schools, organizations and households around the world. And as our global reach is growing, so is our footprint.
Many of you will be excited to learn that later this year, OpenDNS will add a new datacenter in Amsterdam to better serve our European customers and a yet-to-be-determined Asia location to serve our customers in the Pacific Rim.
Since OpenDNS is anycasted, the new datacenters mean faster DNS resolution for those OpenDNS users in Europe and the Pac Rim. You don’t have to make any changes on your end to get the faster DNS resolution. We’ll be sure to keep you posted with more detail about when the new locations go online.

Upgrade Network European Servers

Today our European network connectivity has been doubled from 30Gbit to 60Gbit and is our datacenter, as from today, officially partnered with DE-CIX with a 10Gbit connection. The DE-CIX in Frankfurt is the Internet Exchange that offers direct and settlement-free IP interconnection (“peering”) to the largest aggregation of networks in Central- and Eastern Europe. Also the existing capacity of our datacenter did get expanded by 2x10Gbit.

New cPanel builds have been published to improve installation, speed, memory usage and upgrade experiences. Recently, installs and updates have been taking excessively long due to CPAN module tests during the P erl module updates. New EDGE, CURRENT and RELEASE builds 11.23.3 build 25946 (or later) have been released to address this issue and to improve installer speed and add checks unrelated to P erl. If you have been experiencing update or install issues, we recommend re-downloading http://layer1.cpanel.net/latest for installs or re-running /scripts/upcp for updates.

cPanel Improved Installer

10 Minute AMS-IX outage 19-06-08

Yesterday around 15:55 the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX) had a 10 minute partly outage, at 16:05 they switched over to the backup network. (topology swap). This caused some websites to be unreachable from dutch ISP’s.

Gistermiddag rond 15:55 uur heeft de Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX) ongeveer 10 minuten gedeeltelijk plat gelegen, om 16:05 uur is er overgeschakeld op het backup netwerk (topology swap). Dit heeft als gevolg gehad dat sommige websites niet benaderbaar waren via nederlandse ISP’s.

VeriSign Announces Increase in .Com/.Net Domain Name Fees

Verisign, will increase the .com/.net domain name fees as from october 1 2008, note that the published fees are the fees payed by the registars and is not the end-user price. 040 Hosting does not yet know if this will impact our current fees but we will do our upmost to keep the prices at the same level as we did last year.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – March 27, 2008 – VeriSign, Inc. (NASDAQ: VRSN), the leading provider of Internet infrastructure for the networked world, today announced, effective as of October 1, 2008, an increase in registry domain name fees for .com and .net, per its agreements with ICANN.

VeriSign announced that the registry fee for .com domain names will increase from $6.42 to $6.86 and that the registry fee for .net domain names will increase, from $3.85 to $4.23.

Traffic volume continues to increase with the emergence of consumer-driven services, the surge in Web-connected wireless devices and the proliferation of technologies and services using the Domain Name System (DNS). VeriSign processes a peak of more than 33 billion DNS queries per day under normal traffic conditions.

The .com and .net infrastructures are continually being fortified and scaled to defend against increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks and to help protect against service disruptions. VeriSign is increasing the capacity of its global Internet infrastructure by ten times by the year 2010. Additionally, VeriSign will increase its daily DNS query capacity from 400 billion queries a day to over 4 trillion queries a day and will increase the aggregate network bandwidth of its primary resolution centers around the world from more than 20 gigabits per second (Gbps) to greater than 200 Gbps per second. VeriSign will also expand its deployment of Regional Internet Resolution Sites to more than 100 locations across the globe by 2010. VeriSign is also deploying new proprietary security upgrades and monitoring tools to identify, track and isolate malicious Internet traffic generated from cyber attacks
