Deprecate support of SquirrelMail
As of cPanel & WHM version 74, cPanel has announced the deprecation of SquirrelMail, one of the long-standing bundled webmail applications included in cPanel. This decision marks the beginning of the end for SquirrelMail within the cPanel ecosystem. Starting with version 76, cPanel will stop shipping SquirrelMail for new installations. Complete removal of support is scheduled for version 78. This change will impact many users who have relied on the simplicity and functionality of SquirrelMail over the years.
The reasoning behind cPanel’s decision is primarily related to the outdated nature of SquirrelMail’s codebase. As web technologies evolve and security standards become more stringent, maintaining older software like SquirrelMail becomes increasingly challenging. cPanel has provided further insight into this decision on their official blog, and they encourage users to join the ongoing conversation surrounding this change. Currently, we are preparing to switch to cPanel version 70 in the stable tree, which is expected to become available around Q2 of 2018. While SquirrelMail will still be available in that version, it’s important to note that this is a transitional period. Users who still rely on SquirrelMail are strongly advised to begin exploring alternative webmail solutions.
cPanel continues to support both Horde and Roundcube, which are modern and actively maintained webmail clients that offer a more secure and user-friendly experience.
As part of our commitment to offering reliable and secure services, 040Hosting will also discontinue support for SquirrelMail as soon as cPanel officially deprecates it. We recommend our clients begin migrating to either Horde or Roundcube to ensure a smooth transition and continued access to webmail features without interruption.
