Local Load Balancing by DNS
Local load balancing provides a combination of greater capacity and high availability. The load balancing system presents a single external ip address known as a virtual server address. Client requests are redirected internally to an available physical server for fulfillment.
Global Load Balancing by DNS
Global load balancing provides sites with content delivery capabilities from multiple physical locations. The motivations for doing so include: enhanced performance resulting from shortening the distance from the client to the server, additional service capacity by spreading the load across multiple servers, and enhanced availability resulting from the use of multiple servers.
Automatic failover by DNS
Failures in the production servers can happen at any time. They can occur in the middle of the night or on holidays. Unless a site can dedicate resources to watch the service manually, automatic failover is an absolute requirement. Automatic failover ensures that website or other service users will be automatically redirected to the hot standby environment whenever necessary.
Automated Maintenance Page
Automated maintenance notices can save the day for your site when all else has failed. While the requested page is not delivered, a page explaining the situation is a much better response than nothing at all. The user then knows that the site is still active and they can expect it to be available shortly.
Server Health Monitoring
In active-standby configurations, one or more servers are marked as hot standby servers. When a failure of an active server is detected by the health monitor one of the hot standby servers is automatically added to the pool of active servers eligible for service.
