Datacenter Europe, Strasbourg

Nov 26, 2010

Datadock is Europe’s most environment-friendly data center and has already won the eco Award 2010 donated by the German Internet Association “eco” as the best data center. Furthermore, it received the highest rating of five stars in the independent Datacenter Star Audit, which evaluates the technical quality of data centers.

In more than three years of planning and construction time there was aimed at building an eco-friendly and at the same time ultra-modern data center with a comprehensive security and redundancy concept. Located in Strasbourg, France, this would be the perfect location for our services, situated on the most important and fastest glass fiber routes to Germany and the rest of Europe.

Datadock datacenter is connected directly to the most important European internet exchange points over our own redundant 100 GBit backbone hence it features the perfect speed and availability of your data. On the other hand, the area around Strasbourg is very rich in groundwater, which rendered it possible to implement an innovative and eco-friendly cooling concept at Datadock.

The current Frankfurt data center will be closed for operations by the end of 2010, so we are currently planning to start migrating all EU servers to the new facility mid September, transfers will be done off peak hours (between 00:00 and 08:00am GMT+1). Servers in our St.Louis (US) data center are not affected.

We will inform you about the exact date at least one week before moving your servers. The move will not affect any changes of server settings, your private network setup or IP address settings. All IP addresses will remain the same.

Some more interesting facts about Datadocks.

An unrivaled cooling system has been installed at datadock. This system makes use of the area’s extensive ground water sources, which are extracted by means of specially built wells. Normally, cooling is one of the most important power and cost factors in a data center. But since the ground water is only 12° C cold when it’s taken out of the ground, its temperature doesn’t have to be further decreased in order to use it in the data center. This has great impact on the energy balance. The ground water itself never gets into the data center’s inner cooling cycle. It is only used for taking the heat from the inner cooling cycle at the heat exchangers. It is neither polluted in this process nor is any water wasted. Due to this cost-saving and efficient cooling method the European top PUE value (Power Usage Efficiency) of 1.21 is achieved.

Datacenter Star Audit (DCSA)

The data center datadock, once again, received the highest possible rating of five stars in Datacenter Star Audit’s new Version 3.0. Carried out by the eco Association of the German Internet Industry, the DCSA is an objective and independent quality seal for data centers.

The DSCA 3.0 is a completely new audit, revised in 2013. Data centers are assessed by at least two independent auditors according to predetermined criteria.

Approved Energy Efficient Data Center

As part of the DCSA, datadock is one of the first data centers to also receive the new green star. The green star certifies datadock as an ”Approved Energy Efficient Data Center„ and thus highlights its optimal energy efficiency.
